I usually wear an open face when commuting in the city, and a full face when out on the open road. Even if I didn't want to wear a helmet I would have to wear goggles as the wind makes my eyes water.
I always wear good heavy hiking boots, heavy leather gloves, and a heavy padded leather jacket. I wear regular blue jeans in town, and a pair of "Draggin Jeans" (denim reinforced with kevlar patches in the knees and seat) when on the highway. I will always pack along rain gear if riding more than a half hour away from home.

Anyone who asks you to step past your own personal safety boundaries doesn't sound much like a friend to me. I'd get new friends.
